American composer, conductor, pianist, author and music lecturer. Born August 25, 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, United States. Died October 14, 1990 in The Dakota, New York City, NY, United States (aged 72). Most famous for his time as music director with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (the first American-born conductor to lead a major American symphony orchestra) and his works such as "West Side Story" and "On The Town". Inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971. He married actress Felicia Montealegre on September 10, 1951, with whom they had three children, Jamie Bernstein, and . Unrelated to Elmer Bernstein, though they were friends.
