Record Label
Independent label set up in 1993 from within major label RCA/BMG by A&R Ben Wardle. Because it was distributed by independent distributor Vital (later to become PIAS) its alternative rock roster qualified for the independent chart which would give artists more time to develop rather than being put through the major label system and the pressure of reaching the Top 40. The roster began with Sleeper who released their debut EP in 1993. Further signing were Stephen Duffy, The Wannadies and 60ft Dolls followed by Wubble U and Westpier. The label was folded into the parent label in 1997 subsequent to the success of Sleeper and in some respects marked the period of Britpop as the moment Indolent stopped so the genre.
