label.recordLabel
Chicago, Illinois label associated with records issued by the subsidiary of Chess. Originally named Argo (6), the label's name was changed to Cadet in 1965 to avoid confusion with the British label Argo (2). For counterfeit editions and other unofficial versions of its releases, please see Cadet (4). In January 1969 the Chess label and the subsidiaries were bought by GRT. In the 1970s the label declined and was acquired in August 1975 by the All Platinum Record Group, which became Sugar Hill Records Ltd. in 1979. In 1985 the Chess name and catalog was sold to MCA Records, Inc. The use of original Argo cover art on reissues can be found through the late 1970s and should be documented properly. The initial label was blue fading to white. In 1971 the design changed to yellow with a red or pink perimeter and bar. Appears on most releases as simply Cadet accompanied by the Chess logo.
