Los Angeles-based punk rock band. NIIS (pronounced “Nice”) combines elements of early grunge, hardcore, lo-fi garage, and punk to produce an indefinable sound that is unique and unmistakable. The four-piece band, which consists of members from the Bay Area and Los Angeles, draws inspiration for its songs and lyrics from punk rock groups such as Subhumans, Crass, Hole, and Rudimentary Peni. The band's ferocious leader, Mimi, vocally challenges capitalism and societal structures with her primal cries. Mimi's life experiences are reflected in the band's songs. Since their 2020 debut EP, Not Niis, and 2022’s acclaimed Must Be…, Niis has built a reputation for chaos-infused punk anthems. Sharing stages with renowned acts like GBH, FEAR, and Adolescents, and performing at festivals such SXSW, Punk in the Park, and Echo Park Rising, the band’s live shows are a relentless force. "The powers that be want us to pit against each other," the band's guitarist says, summarizing their goal. It's more punk to connect, form communities, and treat one another with kindness. With this philosophy at its heart, Niis is proof of punk's ongoing influence as a medium for authenticity, disobedience, and connection.
