In Finnish, "tuohi" is the white/black bark of birch trees, traditionally used for domestic purposes in a variety of ways, including shoes. But in Finnish slang 'tuohi' were also used for bank notes. had won the EBU jazz band competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1971. It was dismantled shortly afterwards, when the pianist Heikki Sarmanto left for the group in his his own name. After Sarmanto left the band, the remaining trio of Vesala, Paakkunaninen and Hauta-Aho, was joined by three new horn players. Late 1971 or early 1972, the new sextet was formed, as Tuohi Klang. They released one album, [r=4332544], in 1972. They performed as a group the last time in January 1973.
