Born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 23, 1984, Benjamin Laub—professionally known as Grieves—was exposed from an early age to a wide range of musical traditions, largely through his father's involvement in the city's jazz and blues scene. After relocating to Fort Collins, Colorado, and later to Seattle at the age of nineteen, Laub continued to expand his musical influences, incorporating elements of punk rock before becoming deeply immersed in hip hop as both an artistic and cultural discipline.
