Fuchsia were a orchestral progressive folk rock band from England. They were formed by Tony Durant at Exeter university in 1970. Durant met up with Mike Gregory, who was in the Albion Band later, plus Mick Day on bass and played as a 3 piece heavy rock band though incorporating theatre and poetry. Durant was listening to classical music and would go to concerts and hear Bartok, Bach, Beethoven, and Prokoviev. He decided to have two sets of music, one ‘heavier rock style’, then integrate strings for the second half. He advertised and found the girls, Janet Rogers, Madeleine Bland, Vanessa Hall-Smith, who supplied the strings. The band played and recorded an album in 1971. The album failed to make an impression and the band recorded another demo in 1971, “The Band” and “Ragtime Brahms” but there was no interest and they disbanded. However the album went on to become a cult classic and some 40 years later a follow up album was recorded. The resurgence of the 1971 albums popularity is captured by film makers The Cairnes Brothers in their documentary, The Story of an Album, Lost and Found.
