African fingerstyle guitarist, singer and lyricist from Kenya. He is often credited as "Marehemu George Mukabi", which is Swahili for "the late (=deceased) George Mukabi". Born: 1930 in Kisa near Kakamega Died: 1963 in Butsotso, Kenya (Murdered) He developed a fingerpicking guitar style influenced by Malawian bands that became popular in western Kenya and helped shape Sukuti and Omutibo music. His work influenced musicians like , and songs such as “Sengula Nakupenda” and “Mtoto si Nguo” are still played. In 2017, a compilation album [m1337727] and a documentary A Child is Not a Cloth highlighted his influence on Kenyan music. His career ended in 1963 after a violent conflict with his second wife, who had broken his guitar. When he assaulted her at her parents’ home, villagers intervened and fatally attacked him.
