Kyoko Furuya (古家杏子) began her career as a piano student in Tokyo’s Kunitachi College of Music. Equal parts in love with the music of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Roberta Flack, as soon as she graduated from college in the late ‘70s she attempted to pursue a music career as a singer-songwriter. Debuting in a duo dubbed with future actress Yumi Mizusawa, they quietly became a popular thing in the acoustic Tokyo folk scene. In 1982 she released the album Cold Water (冷たい水).
