Mor Ve Ötesi

Mor ve ötesi (stylized as mor ve ötesi) is a Turkish alternative rock band from Istanbul. Formed in January 1995 by students at the Deutsche Schule Istanbul, the group originally consisted of Harun Tekin (vocals and guitar), Alper Tekin (bass), Derin Esmer (vocals and guitar) and Kerem Kabadayı (drums). They released their debut album [m=933276] in 1996 and played their first concert in Ankara that same year. In 1996, Burak Güven replaced Alper Tekin on bass. The band’s second album, [m=965127] (1999), brought them wider recognition, while the devastating 1999 Kocaeli earthquake prompted a shift toward socially and politically conscious lyrics. Shortly after, Derin Esmer left the group to move to the United States and was replaced by guitarist Kerem Özyeğen, completing the lineup that has remained stable ever since. Their third album [m=965116] (2001) marked a clear musical and lyrical evolution. The 2003 [m=377615] EP followed, but it was their fourth studio album [m=377614] (2004) that catapulted them to mainstream success. Selling over 300,000 copies, the record featured sharp political criticism of the Iraq War and U.S. foreign policy, while tracks like “Bir Derdim Var” and “Cambaz” became generational anthems. The album fundamentally changed the perception of rock music in Turkey and is still regarded as one of the most important Turkish rock releases of the 2000s. Subsequent albums [m=965115] (2006) and [m=965124] (2008) further solidified their reputation with darker, more introspective songwriting and continued political edge. In 2008 the band represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade with the high-energy single [m=965132], qualifying from the semi-final and finishing 7th in the final. Over the following years they released [m=965119] (2010), [m=965113] (2012), and [m=2766176] (2022), consistently blending a powerful rock sound with personal reflection and social commentary. Their live performances — including major stadium shows, European and U.S. tours, the 2022 Vodafone Park concert documented in the film Tamiri Mümkün, and the monumental [r=37030275] tribute concert album in 2025 — have become legendary in the Turkish music scene. Known for their unwavering commitment to artistic integrity and social causes, mor ve ötesi remain one of the most influential and respected bands in modern Turkish rock, having helped bring alternative rock to a mainstream audience while never compromising their voice.
