Born May 6, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Died 1980 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Known by his Muslim name from 1949, is believed to have influenced him, and Ibn Ali is often seen as an influence on . The pianist rarely performed in public and one album with Max Roach for was all that was available for over fifty years. A follow-up with saxophonist , also for Atlantic, in 1965 was not released and long considered lost, but a near complete copy was found to have survived and was issued in 2021 by . Other recordings of Ibn Ali, from the period 1962-65 not originally intended for commercial release, have been issued by Omnivore. Died from a stroke aged about 49.
